We are a team of lifelong animal lovers who turned our passion into our profession.
Paige Massey, DVM
Dr. Paige is a Southshore native and graduate of Ecole Classique. She double majored in Anthropology and Biology at Ole Miss before going into Veterinary Medicine at LSU. While at LSU, she particularly enjoyed working as a laboratory instructor for the undergraduate histopathology students. Dr. Paige started her career in Metairie before moving north in 2002.
After working as an associate in several other practices, she decided it was time to have a hospital of her own and teamed up with Dr. Alissa to found Monroe Street Animal Hospital. Business ownership must run in the blood, as she learned the principles of management from her parents, who started Massey’s Sporting Goods.
Dr. Paige loves all aspects of small animal medicine and has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery. She continues to work part time at the St. Bernard Animal Shelter, where she is their primary surgeon.
When she steps away from the hospital, she lives in Covington with her husband and teenaged daughter. Their family also includes a sweet Boxer, a precocious cat, a friendly lizard and a very chill Betta fish.
Alissa Whitney, DVM
Dr. Alissa is almost a Mandeville native, having moved here with her family in 1980. After graduating from Mandeville High School, she attended MIT, where she studied Brain and Cognitive Science. She spent seven years as a junior/senior high school Science teacher before attending vet school at LSU. Dr. Alissa was in the middle of her senior clinical rotations when Hurricane Katrina hit, and she considers the aftermath of the storm to have been the best part of her education.
She met Dr. Paige when they worked together at another practice; they realized that they made a good team and decided to take the leap and start a hospital of their own. The fact that her family still lives a few blocks away is a happy bonus.
Dr. Alissa particularly enjoys Internal Medicine and preventative health cases. She spends some of her days off at Pen Pals, Inc., Louisiana’s only prison-based animal shelter, where she is a staff vet. She does sometimes miss her time as a teacher, and spent several years as an adjunct instructor for the Veterinary Technology program at Northshore Technical Community College.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and their many, many animals. They have four outgoing heeler mixes and three very spoiled cats.
Samantha is a Madisonville native who grew up in Mandeville and graduated from MHS. She later studied Biological Engineering at LSU. Since moving back home, she has worked in management and customer service at several local businesses. Samantha now brings her experience and love for animals to the front of the house here at Monroe Street.
Away from work, Samantha is in charge of a husband, two daughters, three dogs, a cat and flock of chickens. As if that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she is also a passionate fiber artist. She knits and hand weaves, and has been teaching herself to spin yarn and sew. She recently started Bayou Lily Handwoven in order to share her creations with the public.
RachelAnn Harb, RVT
Rachel, who is originally from Chalmette, moved to Mandeville with her family in the early ’90s. She attended OLL, MJH and MHS, so Monroe Street is part of her old stomping grounds. She studied Veterinary Technology at Delgado and has extensive experience in Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology and practice management. Not one for downtime, Rachel also teaches tech students as part of Penn Foster’s online program.
In her down time, Rachel enjoys volunteering with her church and spending time at the Lakefront. She now lives in Covington with her wonderful, supportive husband of almost 20 years and their son and daughter. While the family has a variety of animals, Rachel considers herself a crazy cat lady. (Nothing crazy about cat ladies at all, as far as we’re concerned.)
Anna Kessling, RVT
Growing up in a missionary family, Anna’s moved around quite a bit. If she is from anyplace in particular, it would be Illinois. She came to Louisiana to volunteer after Katrina and decided to stay. She studied in the Veterinary Technology program at Northshore Technical Community College and then spent several years as an instructor and administrator for the school. Her background includes both general practice and emergency medicine; she has a particular love for Critical Care.
Anna and her husband live in Mississippi with their four dogs and two cats. They have a shared love of working out. Anna even trained in MMA, so be sure not to make her angry. She also enjoys, reading, cooking and a nice glass of coffee or wine.
Regan Higgins-Lang, Reception
Regan Higgins-Lang is a true Mandeville native and another graduate of MHS. She did field work in Costa Rica before earning her degree in Biology from Southeastern, then came back home to raise her family. A talented glass artist, you may have seen her working at other local businesses, including her family’s studio, A Pane in the Glass. (Fun fact: Regan designed and made the stained glass panel that hangs at our front desk.)
David grew up in Covington surrounded by older sisters, so he should feel right at home here at Monroe Street. His youngest sister is a registered veterinary technician, and he followed her right into the profession. He has extensive experience running a kennel and assisting with exams and lab work, but his special interest is surgery.
David is our go-to exotics person; in addition to his dogs, he also has an assortment of exotic pets. Questions about what kind of snake you saw in your yard? We’re probably deferring to David.
His outside interests include hiking, gaming, collecting pins and Disney. David’s favorite movie is the live action version of the Grinch; he says that animals with lots of toe floof always make him think of “Grinch fingers”.
Your pet’s happiness is essential and at the heart of our veterinary practice. From the moment you walk in the door you’ll find our facility different than a typical veterinary clinic!
